In the late 2000's, the shift to smaller, more fuel efficient vehicles, the rise of Asian brands such as Toyota, and the economic crisis shook the Western auto industry. General Motors and the Ford Motor company streamlined their business by retiring several brands, such as Hummer, Pontiac, Saturn (GM), and Mercury (Ford) while restructuring.
Earlier, in 2004, GM had abandoned the Oldsmobile brand, the 4th oldest car manufacturing brands in history (1897) and the oldest American brand (preceding Ford by a few years)
